If you are right handed and right eye dominate you’re good to go. So what happens if your left eye dominate and right handed? There are a few things you can do to fix this problem. You could teach yourself how to shoot left handed, which takes a lot of practice. Or there are other ways you can make your other eye dominate. One is to close your left eye but this gives you a handicap right off the bat. In the world of the shooting sports, you have to use both eyes to follow your target. This is called depth perception. Depth perception lets you know how far things are from you. With one eye closed you cannot tell how far things are from you. With one eye closed you have to squint to see from the other eye. If you squint you are only using part of your eye. With both eyes open you see a lot better then with just one. There are other ways that you can make the eye that is less powerful your dominant eye. One is to get yourself a pair of shooting glasses and a piece of clear tape. Take that tape and put it on the shooting glasses over the eye that is dominant and this will make your other eye take over. With the clear tape on the glasses you can see through it but it will be a little blurry.
You can wear a patch over the eye that is dominant. Over time you can make your lesser eye dominant. This takes a while to do and a lot of time at the range. There are other ways to fix this problem.
You can have a custom stock made that is bent to sit on the right side and crosses over your body so that the sights of the gun are sitting on the left side. There are scope mounts that put the scope off to one side of the gun so you can see out your dominant eye. But these are expensive and do not work for everyone. If you are one of these people that have this problem go see your gunsmith and talk to him or her about what they can do for you. See your eye doctor and talk to him about how to make your none dominant eye your dominant eye. Your doctor may have exercises to help you. Keep in mind that you are going to have to practice more to get used to this new way of seeing.
Have fun out there, be safe, practice the rules of gun safety and you can enjoy shooting for a long time.
